I really like these two photos because on the very last page of our book we are asking the readers to think of their own hero. We also hope that our book provides our readers with a lesson that they can be their own hero as well. Believing in themselves is a reward on it’s own.

Operation Homefront plans to provide military members and families in need with holiday meals this year. They have been doing so since 2009 and every year it is a huge success. This year they plan to reach past their goal of 2,000 meals in the Tri-State area at Fort Drum in NY. Kid Rock is teaming up with Jim Beam in order to make the holidays much easier and happier for military and families to get through.

Book Proofs

I ordered my book last Wednesday morning and received an email today that the proof has been shipped. I found a coupon that gave me twenty percent off of the book. The code was LYNDA22 for anyone who has not ordered their book yet. I am really excited to see that all of our hard work has paid off. I’m glad that we chose the charity that we did. Things have been really frustrating but it was all for a good cause, so it was worth it.

We have all finally ordered the proof of our book this past weekend. We are all excited to receive our own copies even though it is not the final product. It will be cool to see all our photos and texts lined out in front of us. The proof will be able to help us create our final version because we will be able to depict the actual sizes of the pictures and pages as well as the thickness of the book. We arranged the content so that a variety of our submissions will be seen throughout the book. We didn’t really have time to work with colors and design but we plan to make it much more dramatic in our final book. I’m interested in seeing the difference between our proof and final copy.

I loved Joe Carlough’s presentation! He is full of knowledge and really want’s to guide us in the right direction of this book. I loved the different ways he showed us to bind a book, I still use it to this day, also I loved all of his different creations! I would love to see more of him in the future as I complete my journey in the Writing Art’s Course!

I am excited for this project. I am excited to form my own picture with the pictures and the text I want. Having the ability to complete this project is exciting especially since I want to be a teacher. Hopefully my students will enjoy watching their work turn into a book! It truly is fascinating!

The Death of the Book

After reading this story, it’s quite interesting to see just how much the books have changed especially in the past few years. As each day goes on, technology is improved even more so then it was before. I can’t stand reading a book through an electronic device. I am still one that looks the old fashioned book. Yes, over the years the interest level as gone down. But there is still a time when I need to unwind and just relax and what’s a better way to do that then read a book.

The author states that the book might “die” what I believe this means is that we will begin seeing an end of the hardback book and will see books easing into a more electronic fashion. We have already seen the introduction of the Nook, Kindle, where people are able to download a book right to their electronic device, and take that device anywhere. Books will be around forever I feel, but as the years go on I believe we will see a decline in the number of book stores. Around Rowan’s campus I have noticed over the past few semesters that you can now purchase e-books where you download the book right onto your computer. The kind of book that will face death will be books that are on selves. They are not the kind of books are society is used too anymore and the kind of death that it will face is one that is due to the future. For the people just being bought into our world they will have no problems, because it will most likely be a electronic book by the time they are in school. But for people in my age group (21 years old) it will take some adjustment especially since we are so used to having to go to a book store, and sit the books in our laps. The author also states that we have entered a “new electric age” which I am sure we will continue seeing for many years. I do not think that a book dying would have much of an impact on education as most books are becoming electronic and students can read them on their laptops while tweeting, facebooking or even just working on their assignments. Socially, I do not think much would change people would still be able to talk about the book and their favorite parts. The book will always be around but I do believe we will see drastic changes. I give it a few years time when there will be no more book stores, everyone will be a type away.

I have finally ordered the proof of our book. I am nervous and excited on receiving our book. I know that it is just our proof, but we worked so hard on it and I hope it looks as good as we think it does. As always the finished project is different once it is printed out. It may look one way on the computer but when printed it could be much different. The colors and the texts and the resolution of the pictures is what worries me more than the actual content of our book. We arranged the content very well and the book tells an actual story as you read it. I just hope that we do not have much more to do, so we can order the final book and begin selling them to raise money for The March of Dimes.

I am looking forward to looking at your finished project. I love animals and think it is very interesting to learn and see all of the animals that we may not think exist. There are so much wildlife that is becoming endangered and losing their homes due to landscaping and also the crazy weather. The birds in your post are amazing the coloring is beautiful.

Overall this project was interesting. I think it was a little frustrating at times, the spreadsheet rankings are definitely among the frustration aspect. Also the time we had for this project in class was not much at all. My group and I had no problems meeting outside of class which was great. However many people can not meet as much as we did outside of class. I am glad that we are almost finished this book and excited to see the outcome.

I think it was a very successful meeting, as was our pre-class meeting on Tuesday. We have a very strong group that works well together and I’m proud of all we’ve accomplished on such a tight schedule.

I can’t wait to get our actual first book proof in the mail and then make the final copy!

I (Don't) Have a Voice...

How ironic is it that yesterday I sat down with my group again to work on our book, which is title “I Have a Voice”, when I didn’t actually have a voice at all?

Due to an illness with my throat, I lost my voice and verbal communication was extremely difficult and borderline impossible for me to do during our pre-class and in-class meeting.

I am very thankful to have such a great, supportive group that works so well together and finds ways to communicate with me even if I can’t use my voice. Together we were still able to make final decisions and get our book done well.

Not having a voice also made me think of all the different ways to define what a voice is. Do you have to be able to talk to have a voice? I don’t think so. You can communicate without speaking. They helped me communicate by writing notes, texts, Microsoft words/other forms of technology. They were also able to “read” me through my facial expressions. As class wore on I kept feeling sicker and sicker and more and more pain. Towards the end Erin actually gave me a hug because she thought I was going to cry because I was in so much pain. Thanks, Erin, you made my day!

I’m glad to have a few days off from school now to rest up. We ordered the first proof of our books and I’m so excited to see how they look. This is what our cover is supposively going to look like:

I can’t wait to get it in a few weeks! It feels so nice to see it all slowly coming together now!

According to the Wildlife Conservation Society website, there are now, “Flashes of red, blue, and yellow stream above the treetops of Guatemalan forests. This year, the Maya Biosphere Reserve’s scarlet macaw population of only 300 or so parrots has added 29 new members to the flock. Hatched and raised with the help of WCS conservationists, the once at-risk fledglings are now flying wild. In 2003, just one bird emerged out of 15 nests.

I have to agree that a lot was learned when using Blurb. At the beginning of the project we all seemed to be slow moving and unsure of how to apply certain editing techniques. At the end of the book we all picked up on how to apply affects, different fonts, layout, etc. Overall using Blurb allowed us to be subjected to a lot of editing techniques.

First Copy of Book

After working for several hours today on our book project (from about 10am-8pm to be exact) we have FINALLY created something that is worth every frustration and hour we have ever put into it. I cannot be happier with the outcome of our book for the Wildlife Conservation Society which will be called, “Voices for the Faces.” This book completely depicts the vision that we have so diligently been working toward. Within our pages you will find beautiful photographs and text which will allow for you to see just how beautiful the WILD can be. This project is not yet complete, but I can say it has definitely been an experience and my group has definitely put forth the effort. We hope to be holding a finished copy soon. :)

I too agree that this was not an easy feat. We have been working on our project since 9:30 this morning, with only a few breaks for class, and it is currently 9:00p.m. The hardest part for us, other than the initial looking for pictures, was determining the order in which we placed them in the book so that they tell a story and determining which pieces of text we are going to use for each of the pictures. While the process has been challenging, we also feel very happy with our overall finished project and are looking forward to our book draft to come in.

WCS - Book Creation

We have been active book editors, working on our book since 9:30 this morning and we have finally come up with a product we can be proud of!! The last bit we just finished is our introduction, which we feel captures the true essence of the vision we have for our book! We LOVE the outcome and can’t wait until we get our proof book to see all of our hard work in true book form!! Further, it is our hope that all of our hard work pays off in the end for the animals across the globe and that we are able to raise a ton of money for the Wildlife Conservation Society.

On Saturday our group met for several hours to go over some of the assignment requirements, and start officially creating our layout for our book. This process was not necessarily easy. First, we began placing specific pictures in different places to get a feel on how they looked, what they represented, and how our audience would intepret them. Then, we began placing a mixture of texts and images that corresponded with one another. When ordering our pictures we considered the color, the image, the message, and order. Our group contained different opinions on some pictures, but overall we had a similar idea on how we wanted our book to look!
